Windows 10 End of Support: What Northeast Ohio Businesses Need to Do Before October 2026

If your business is still running Windows 10, you have a decision to make, and the window to make it cheaply is closing fast.

Microsoft ended standard support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Since then, Windows 10 machines have only received security patches through Microsoft's paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. The first year of that program ends on October 13, 2026, and after that date, the cost of staying on Windows 10 goes up sharply, while the risk of doing nothing becomes unacceptable for any business that handles customer data, processes payments, or carries cyber insurance.

Here's what that means in practical terms, and what to do about it.

"But I heard Windows 10 got a free extension"

You may have seen headlines that Microsoft extended free Windows 10 security updates into 2027. That's true, for personal home PCs only.

The free consumer ESU program specifically excludes devices that are joined to a company domain, managed through Microsoft Entra, or enrolled in any device management system. In other words: if it's a business computer, it doesn't qualify. Business machines need the commercial ESU program, and that one costs real money:

• Year 1: $61 per device
• Year 2: $122 per device
• Year 3: $244 per device

The pricing doubles every year, and it's cumulative. If you wait until Year 2 to enroll, Microsoft requires you to buy Year 1 retroactively. A business that does nothing until after October 2026 will pay a minimum of $183 per device just to get current on patches, for an operating system that's still on its way out.

For a 20-person office, that's $3,660 in catch-up fees before you've solved anything. That same money puts a meaningful dent in actually fixing the problem.

What happens if you just keep running Windows 10 without ESU?

Nothing, at first. Your computers will keep turning on. That's exactly what makes this dangerous.

Without ESU enrollment, every new vulnerability discovered in Windows 10 stays unpatched on your machines, permanently. Attackers know this, and unsupported operating systems are a favorite target because the exploits keep working. Microsoft has already shipped multiple rounds of security fixes through ESU since October 2025. Machines outside the program have missed every one of them.

There are also downstream consequences that catch businesses off guard:

• Cyber insurance: Many policies require supported, patched operating systems. Running an unsupported OS can give your carrier grounds to deny a claim after an incident.
• Compliance: If your business touches HIPAA, PCI, CMMC, or similar frameworks, unsupported systems typically fall outside required security configurations.
• Software compatibility: Line-of-business applications, browsers, and security tools are steadily dropping Windows 10 support. The gap widens every month.

Your three real options

1. Upgrade to Windows 11 (free, if your hardware qualifies). The Windows 11 upgrade itself costs nothing for licensed Windows 10 machines. The catch is hardware: Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0, a supported processor, and Secure Boot. Many business PCs bought before roughly 2018 don't meet the requirements. The first step is an inventory: knowing exactly which of your machines can upgrade in place and which can't.

2. Replace the machines that can't upgrade. For PCs that fail the Windows 11 compatibility check, replacement is usually more cost-effective than paying escalating ESU fees to keep aging hardware alive. Older machines are also slower, more failure-prone, and more expensive to support. The ESU bill is just the visible part of the cost.

3. Buy ESU as a bridge: deliberately, not by default. ESU is a legitimate tool for machines that genuinely can't move yet (for example, a PC tied to specialized equipment or legacy software). But it's a runway, not a destination. If you use it, use it with a dated migration plan attached.

Most businesses end up with a mix of all three. The mistake is not choosing, because after October 13, 2026, every option gets more expensive.
